Professor Kevin Pimbblet

Head of the School of Digital and Physical Sciences; Founding Director of DAIM

An observational astronomer and applied data scientist who has worked in research-intensive institutions across two continents. His research covers extra-galactic astronomy, the large-scale structure of the Universe and cosmology, together with allied and applied sciences and a current focus on machine learning and artificial intelligence.

He was DAIM’s inaugural Director and now heads the School of Digital and Physical Sciences, which covers Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics and DAIM.

Professor Adil Khan

Director of DAIM

Professor of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, with more than sixteen years of research, development and teaching across both traditional machine learning and deep learning.

He has built industrial solutions for action and expression recognition, remote sensing, medical image analysis, natural language processing, and crime and accident detection. His theoretical work asks how models can be trained without large amounts of data, generalise to new domains, resist adversarial attacks, make fair decisions, and avoid catastrophic forgetting.

Dr Daniel Farrow

Lecturer and Programme Director

An astronomer by training, with an M.Phys and a PhD from Durham University and around eight years in Germany as a postdoctoral researcher working on cosmology, galaxy surveys and the large-scale structure of the Universe.

He has authored or co-authored over 50 publications in astrophysics and supervises two astronomy PhD students. More recently he co-authored his first paper in data science and healthcare.

Dr Kenneth Y. Wertheim

Lecturer and EDI Champion

I am a systems theorist with expertise in mathematical modelling, scientific computing, and artificial intelligence. My correct pronouns are they and them.

In 2023, I joined the University of Hull as a lecturer. At the Centre of Excellence for Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Modelling, I lead an interdisciplinary research programme investigating biological, social, and intelligent systems.

Dr Alex Richings

Lecturer

I am an astrophysicist, with research interests in galaxy formation, astrochemistry, supermassive black holes, and the interstellar medium. My research uses numerical simulations to study the formation and evolution of galaxies, particularly focussing on the astrochemical modelling of ions and molecules in these simulations.
